SPIE Digital Library Proceedings. CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS Papers Presentations Acoustophoresis uses an ultrasonic standing wave field to manipulate cells in a microfluidic device. Cells within the standing wave field will experience forces which move the cells either to the place of minimum pressure, the node, or to the place of maximum pressure, the anti-node. Blood plasma separation in microchannels is a key element in microfluidics-based biodetection and lab-on-chip technology. In microfluidics, acoustophoresis-based blood plasma separation is considered one of the most efficient approaches for high-throughput separation. However, the physics of the separation of plasma from whole blood (dense suspension) by using acoustophoresis is not well Acoustophoresis Acoustophoretic particle focusing is a modern and very attractive method of removing a variety of objects from solutions in a microfluidic channel. The process is applicable to healthcare applications (malignant cell removal), academic research (nanoparticle separation), industrial applications (reclaiming of rare earths) and two fundamental operational modes of acoustophoresis, i.e. binary acoustophoresis and Free Flow Acoustophoresis (FFA) [7]. A key to these developments is that the direction of cell movement by means of acoustic standing wave forces can be performed in plane with the chip, enabling integration with more advanced microfluidic networks. These forces (including acoustic radiation force, secondary field force between particles, and Stokes drag force) create the phenomena of acoustophoresis, which is the foundation of the acoustic tweezers technology. acoustophoresis (uncountable) acoustic levitation ; a method for suspending matter in a medium by using acoustic radiation pressure from intense sound waves in the medium 2015 November 12, “Cancer Cell Analyses at the Single Cell-Level Using Electroactive Microwell Array Device”, in PLOS ONE ‎ [1] , DOI : 10.1371/journal.pone.0139980 : Iontophoresis is a process of transdermal drug delivery by use of a voltage gradient on the skin. Molecules are transported across the stratum corneum by electrophoresis and electroosmosis and the electric field can also increase the permeability of the skin. [3] Typically sound waves at ultrasonic frequencies are used [4] thus creating no sound audible to humans. acoustophoresis (uncountable) acoustic levitation ; a method for suspending matter in a medium by using acoustic radiation pressure from intense sound waves in the medium 2015 November 12, “Cancer Cell Analyses at the Single Cell-Level Using Electroactive Microwell Array Device”, in PLOS ONE ‎ [1] , DOI : 10.1371/journal.pone.0139980 : Particles in an acoustic field can be moved by forces originating from the interaction among the acoustic waves, fluid, and particles. These forces (including acoustic radiation force, secondary field force between particles, and Stokes drag force) create the phenomena of acoustophoresis, which is the foundation of the acoustic tweezers technology. Acoustophoresis is a non-contact and label-free mode of manipulating particles and cell populations and allows for implementation of several separation modes . The technology is currently finding increased applications in bioanalytical and clinical applications of cell handling and manipulation.

The technology utilizes the principles of acoustophoresis to transfer the RBCs from the original plasma-containing solution into a protein-free SAG-M additive solution in a continuous flow process. The preparation of protein free RBC concentrate is important for blood transfusion to patients suffering from immunoglobulin A (IgA)-deficiency and developing antibodies against IgA. Acoustophoresis as a separation and diagnostic tool is well positioned to help in the separation and diagnosis of cells taking advantage of its unique separation criteria of density and compressibility. from wikipedia.
